General Description:

This seasonal, full-time position starts May 24 and runs through August 18, 2017.  This position also has the potential to start at in early May for the right candidate.

S/he coordinates Yampatika’s summer camp program and some community-based, youth programs. S/he supervises Camp Naturalist, and Interns, to assist them in the preparation and delivery of high quality educational programs for youth aged 5-14 yrs.  S/he should be a creative team player passionate about working with young people. This position is supervised by the Program Director.


  • Work in full cooperation with the Yampatika staff, interns, and volunteers;
  • Work with the Program Director to collaboratively plan and facilitate staff training;
  • Organize and facilitate weekly camp staff meetings;
  • Take a leadership role in camper safety and any emergency situations that arise and provide Camp Naturalists with support with any behavioral challenges;
  • Provide fill-in support for Camp Naturalists in case of illness, absence, schedule conflicts, and to support planning;
  • Coordinate logistics with Camp Naturalists for field trips, overnight camping trips, and guest speakers for camp;
  • Work with the online registration system on Active.com to generate reports, camper paperwork, and help answer parent/guardian questions;
  • Implement daily camper check-in and check-out procedures;
  • Organize camper paperwork for each day/ week of camp;
  • Serve as a supervisor to Camp Naturalists and Intern Camp Naturalists by reviewing curriculum and shadowing programs providing feedback for program improvements and professional growth;
  • Help staff utilize resources provided to support development of appropriate daily lesson plans for summer camp, and other programs, according to theme and age.
  • Project a positive image through proper uniform, attitude and presentation both in the field and office;
  • Willing and able to step in and support other community programs in need of a naturalist;
  • Be available for overnight camping trips if needed;
  • Take a leadership role in the maintenance of supplies, safety, and cleanliness of Yampatika’s Environmental Learning Center at Legacy Ranch and Camp Nanama at Humble Ranch. Organize any and all repair/maintenance needs of the Ranch (work with the Program Director).

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of experience working at a summer camp with children aged 5- 14;
  • 1-3 years of experience as a supervisor or program coordinator;
  • Background and experience in the field of environmental education;
  • Experience in curriculum development and environmental education program delivery;
  • Comfort with teaching in front of large groups
  • Open communicator with strong written and verbal abilities;
  • Ability to travel on foot up to 5 miles on varied terrain carrying a full day pack;
  • Ability to work several overnight backcountry camping programs with youth;
  • Flexibility and willingness to accept new tasks and feedback;
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Accreditation;
  • Physically able to lift 40 lbs;
  • Passion for Yampatika’s mission;
  • Familiarity with current technology (i.e. web-based software, databases, social media etc);
  • Current driver’s license and safe driving record for the past 5 years;
  • Ability to work in small, busy environment;

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder preferred;
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science/education preferred;
  • Experience with public interpretation;
  • Knowledge of the Rocky Mountain ecology and geography a plus;
  • Camping and backpacking experience with youth a plus (ability to carry an overnight pack weighing up to 40 pounds);
  • Willingness to use a personal vehicle to travel to programs on occasion.
