Day 1: Place Based Learning 101

July 7, 9:30-11:00

Learn the six design principles of place-based learning. Explore what the instructor’s role is and how to support place-based inquiry. Discover and practice questioning strategies that promote engagement, deeper learning, and meaning making for learners of all ages, across all disciplines.

Day 2: Place-based Learning: Designed for ALL Learners

July 14, 9:30-11:00

Featured speaker Tamara Mouw, Director of Teaching and Learning at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, will guide participants through an exploration of how PBL supports the engagement and education of ALL students. Participants will examine how using universal design principles with place-based learning ensure that all learners have access and opportunity.

Day 3: Using Place-based Learning to Teach Culturally

July 21, 9:30-11:00

Featured Speaker David O’Connor, American Indian Consultant at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, will provide multiple ideas and strategies for how educators can move from including culture to infusing culture in the classroom. Participants will learn about Act 31 and reflect on how to integrate American Indian Studies in PBL.

Day 4: Closing the Opportunity Gap with PBL

July 28, 9:30-11:00

We will join Dinah Becton-Consuegra, PBLWorks, as we learn how providing students with learning experiences to actively engage in real-world and personally meaningful projects helps to close opportunity gaps. Following Becton-Consuegra's talk, Summer Learning Series participants will convene to reflect and apply insights to their own settings and students. This presentation is brought to you as a partnership agreement between FIELD Edventures and the Wisconsin Resource Center for Charter School and is a concurrent offering during the 2020 WRCCS Conference.

Day 5: Putting Place-based Learning into Practice

August 4, 9:30-11:00

We will be putting all of our learning together to dive deeply into what place-based learning can look like in blended learning environments. Participants will hear examples from several Wisconsin educators who will share their stories, successes, challenges, and learnings from their experiences this past spring during COVID-related remote learning. Participants will have time to reflect and discuss plans for integrating place-based learning in their teaching contexts--during the pandemic and beyond.
