Cheron H. Davis, Ph.D., is an associate professor of reading education (of all things!) at Florida A&M University. Her research focuses on early literacy intervention, HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) preservice teacher self-efficacy, reflective practices, and integrating literacy across content areas. Her ECO-Read program (Empowering Conservation through Observation, Reading Education, Application, & Discovery), is designed to transform STEM education by integrating environmental education into reading methods courses at HBCUs.

From classroom storytime to writing in the great outdoors, Dr. Davis is committed to demonstrating through teacher preparation how literacy can help save the world—one well-read, environmentally conscious human at a time.

A former second-grade teacher and current mom to two inquisitive little humans, Dr. Davis is passionate about helping things grow—whether it’s her kids, her students, her garden, or (attempting to) keep her indoor plants alive!

Before joining the ee360+ project, Dr. Davis’s environmental education experience largely involved catching bugs as a kid, dutifully caring for countless pet hermit and red-clawed crabs, and cultivating her self-proclaimed green thumb. However, her passion for preserving the planet and her dedication to preparing culturally responsive, diverse K-12 educators have aligned seamlessly with her belief that literacy is the foundation of all learning and discovery.

This intersection led to the creation of ECO-Read (Empowering Conservation through Observation, Reading Education, Application, & Discovery), a holistic program designed to transform STEM education by integrating environmental education into reading methods courses at HBCUs. Through in-person and virtual trainings, encounters with native species, lesson planning, and classroom implementation, the ECO-Read Project seeks to create a future where literacy and environmental stewardship go hand-in-hand.
