How are you using education to build more sustainable and equitable communities? Tell us about your EE work and impact.
At Watoto Go Green, I leverage education to foster sustainable and equitable communities by integrating environmental literacy into the educational experiences of young learners in Kenya. Our programs use creative art, storybooks, and project-based learning to make environmental concepts accessible and engaging for children aged 5–17. By doing so, we not only raise awareness about environmental issues but also empower students with the knowledge and skills to take meaningful action in their communities.
One of our key initiatives is the Greening Tomorrow Initiative, where we set up eco-spaces in schools to serve as class setups where students participate in activities such as recycling projects, tree planting, and conservation efforts. These hands-on experiences help students understand the importance of sustainability and equip them with practical skills to implement eco-friendly practices in their daily lives.
Additionally, we collaborate with local schools to integrate environmental education into their curricula, ensuring that environmental literacy is a fundamental part of students' education. This approach helps create a generation of environmentally conscious individuals who are prepared to tackle environmental challenges and promote sustainable living.
Our impact is evident in the growing number of students and schools involved in our programs, the increased awareness of environmental issues among young people, and the tangible changes in communities, such as cleaner environments and more green spaces. By empowering young learners, we are building a foundation for more sustainable and equitable communities, where everyone has the knowledge and opportunity to contribute to a healthier planet from an informed point of view.
Tell us about your journey to where you are today. What inspired you? What has your path been like?
My journey in becoming an advocate for environmental education has been driven by a deep passion for both the natural world and the power of creative expression. As a photographer, I have always been captivated by the beauty and intricacy of nature, capturing its essence through my lens. However, witnessing the devastating impacts of climate change on these landscapes ignited a sense of urgency in me to take action.
The turning point came when I realized that many young people in Kenya lacked awareness and understanding of environmental issues. I felt a strong calling to bridge this gap through education, leveraging my creative skills to make learning about the environment engaging and impactful. This led to the creation of a platform dedicated to integrating environmental education into the lives of young learners through creative art.
My path has been one of constant learning and adaptation. Establishing Watoto Go Green required me to navigate numerous challenges, from securing resources to designing curricula that resonate with children. However, the support from local communities, schools, organizations and fellow environmental advocates has been invaluable in driving our mission forward.
The most rewarding aspect of this journey has been witnessing the transformation in the children we work with. Seeing their enthusiasm for environmental projects, their growing awareness, and their proactive efforts to make a difference in their communities reinforces my belief in the power of education. It is this collective impact that continues to inspire and motivate me every day.
My journey has been a blend of passion, creativity, and a commitment to making a positive change. Through Watoto Go Green, I aim to continue empowering the next generation with the knowledge and tools they need to build a sustainable and equitable future.
