The REWILDING Minds

REWILDING Minds is a cross-country youth engagement initiative that reconnects young people with nature through citizen science, creativity, and climate action. Implemented across Indonesia (Makassar), Australia (Melbourne), and New Zealand (Auckland), the project empowers secondary school students aged 15–18 to explore and protect local biodiversity while contributing to global environmental knowledge through iNaturalist. Participants will join a four-week virtual training series featuring expert guest speakers on citizen science, climate resilience, urban biodiversity, and youth storytelling. They will then take part in immersive Citizen Science Events in their respective countries—guided fieldwork experiences in local parks, beaches, and forests where youth will observe, identify, and document biodiversity through iNaturalist. Activities such as pollinator and bird walks, nocturnal wildlife observations, and nature journaling will blend scientific inquiry with creativity, fostering both ecological literacy and emotional connection to nature.
Finally, participants will receive mentorship from international experts to refine their biodiversity data and design local Capstone Projects that address real environmental challenges, such as pollinator mapping, invasive species tracking, or coastal restoration. By the end of the program, REWILDING Minds will have built a vibrant network of young citizen scientists equipped with the skills, knowledge, and passion to lead nature-based action and sustain biodiversity awareness in their schools and communities.

Tuun sa Payag (Learning in the Hut)

Tuun sa Payag, which literally translates to “learning in the hut,” is Salumayag Youth Collective for Forests’ hands-on nature-and-culture learning program for children and youth from Manobo communities in Bukidnon. Designed as an informal “nature school,” Tuun sa Payag uses the forest, river, and the community payag (traditional hut) as a classroom, where elders, volunteer foresters, and youth facilitators lead sessions that blend ecology, Indigenous knowledge, music and arts, and practical restoration work. Tuun sa Payag emphasizes youth voice and leadership: participants aren’t only learners but contribute ideas, choose projects, and present what they’ve learned back to the community. Activities include seed-gathering expeditions, nature walks to waterfalls, cooking contests using only foraged or home-grown ingredients, and reflection circles where facilitators engage children and youth to express their hopes and dreams for their community and land. This cyclical practice of action, reflection, and planning helps build confidence and a sense of collective responsibility for landscape restoration.

Voices of the Puna: Community-Led Film Workshop and Documentary Production

Storytelling is a powerful tool to teach Indigenous youth how to raise their voices and build narratives that defend their environment and cultural heritage. "Voices of Puna" aims to empower Indigenous youth in Cusi Cusi to become storytellers and environmental advocates. These communities live in regions deeply affected by extractive industries, water scarcity, and climate change, yet their voices are often excluded from the political decisions that define their future of their territories. This project combines environmental education with documentary filmmaking to create a participatory process that strengthens local capacities and amplifies marginalized perspectives. Students in their final years of high school will learn to analyze environmental challenges such as mining impacts, waste management, and water access, and transform these realities into compelling audiovisual stories. Through hands-on training in recording techniques, storyboarding, and ethical storytelling, youth will gain practical skills to document their surroundings and articulate their visions for a sustainable future.

Building Leadership Capacity in YEAS Student Ambassadors

The Youth Environmental Action Summit (YEAS) is a community-based program that brings together 150 students each year in a forum to make positive environmental change in their communities. Since its inception, students have been involved in all aspects of the program including planning and design to ensure that it truly supports their interests. This Changemaker Grant will enable YEAS to build new capacities in Ambassadors by more thoroughly incorporating leadership development through a series of professional development opportunities and a student leadership retreat. Additionally, YEAS will put into practice a long-standing interest in compensating students for their meaningful work through stipends.

Hyde Farm Biodiversity & Invasive Resilience Program

The Hyde Farm Native Heritage & Snakeroot Conservation Initiative is a collaborative ecological stewardship program dedicated to protecting the Lesser White Snakeroot (Ageratina aromatica) and strengthening the long-term health of one of Cobb County’s most historically and ecologically significant natural landscapes. Hyde Farm represents an increasingly rare Piedmont habitat corridor where high-value native species, relic forest elements, and cultural land history remain intertwined. This project aims to preserve that legacy through science-driven conservation, hands-on restoration, and community-centered education.

Ma'na - Environmental & Resilience Training

In collaboration with the Impulsum Lab, this project will create the first environmental training program in Mexico for coffee farmers who are facing challenges due to climate change, using a participatory approach to skill development. Piloting with two coffee cooperatives in Oaxaca, the project will promote a framework for sustainable agri-food practices that guarantees food security and stable livelihoods for rural farmers, which will integrate environmental training (awareness of natural resources and environmental conservation), community-based resilience and adaptation (using circular economy models), and mitigation (sustainable agriculture practices and forest conservation agriculture). The long-term goal is to adapt the program for additional agri-food sectors.
